Liposuction Q & A

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that permanently removes targeted fat cells. The process works by suctioning unwanted fat from the body. Once removed, those fat cells don’t regenerate, which is one reason why liposuction is among the most common cosmetic surgery procedures in America.

Am I a good candidate for liposuction?

Understanding the benefits and limitations of cosmetic procedures is an important part of a positive experience. Dr. Watkins takes the time to listen to your concerns and discuss how any given procedure can move you closer to your treatment goals.

Liposuction is a form of surgery, so it’s essential that you’re in good overall health before you move forward. You should be within 30% of the weight deemed ideal for your height and body type. Your skin should be elastic and firm, and you should understand that liposuction won’t eliminate cellulite or alter the appearance of your skin.

If you’re a smoker, it’s also critical that you stop smoking for two weeks before and four weeks after your surgery (and ideally longer). Smoking is detrimental to your body’s circulation and healing abilities. Quitting not only enhances your healing process, but it also lengthens your life and improves your overall health and wellness.

What happens during liposuction?

Liposuction is an outpatient procedure, so you’ll go home the same day. Dr. Watkins advises you on whether you need general or local anesthetic, depending on the area of your body being treated and the volume of fat being removed.

Once you’re resting comfortably, Dr. Watkins creates small incisions to guide a thin, tube-shaped cannula to the treatment site. A sterile saline solution with a numbing medication is injected into the area to make it easier to break apart and suction the targeted fat cells.

Dr. Watkins guides the cannula through the treatment area, removing the right volume of fat to improve the contouring in those areas. Once the process is complete, the small incisions are closed and you’re moved to a recovery area while the effects of your anesthesia wear off.

Dr. Watkins provides comprehensive post-operative care instructions. Following that advice is an essential part of a great liposuction experience.
