Tired of Hiding Your Arms? What to Expect From a Brachioplasty

It’s winter right now, so you’re happy to hide your arms under layers of long sleeves, sweaters, and bulky coats. But springtime is coming, and summer after that, and before long, t-shirts and sleeveless tops will be expected in your clothing rotation.

If you’re tired of avoiding those clothes in your closet, tucking your arms into your sides for every picture, and feeling self-conscious because of the loose skin on your arms, it may be time to explore an arm lift, also called a brachioplasty.

Here, our expert team explains what you can expect from a brachioplasty at Frederick H. Watkins, MD.

What is brachioplasty?

Brachioplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure that creates a firmer, more sculpted look to your upper arms by removing excess skin and fat. The procedure works especially well for those whose skin feels loose and flabby due to weight loss, genetics, or skin laxity caused by aging.

Some patients also choose to combine brachioplasty with liposuction to remove even more fat and refine the contours of their arms further.

What should you expect from brachioplasty?

Candidates should be in overall good health and have realistic expectations for the surgery. You’ll meet with Dr. Watkins to discuss your medical history and goals for the procedure. He’ll explain his process and answer any questions you have

During the procedure, Dr. Watkins will make an incision in the area from your elbow to your armpit along the inner or outer portion of your arm. The specific position and length of the incision will depend on the amount of excess skin you have.

He’ll tighten and reshape your underlying supporting tissue with internal sutures and remove your excess skin before smoothing the remaining skin over your arm to create a new, firmer contour.

What is brachioplasty recovery like?

After surgery, you may wear a compression garment to reduce swelling and speed healing, and you may have a small drain to prevent fluid buildup. You can usually return to light activities within 1-2 weeks, but you should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for at least 4-6 weeks.

You may notice an improvement in your arm contour right away, with more visible results after about six weeks, when all the swelling subsides. The tissue removal is permanent, but to keep your results, you’ll have to maintain a stable weight and care for your skin.
