Will Breast Implants Last Forever?

If you’re considering breast implants, you have a lot of information to sift through as you make decisions about the material, size, shape, etc.
One of the factors you should consider is the lifespan of the implants. You’re probably wondering: Will they last forever?
The short answer is no, breast implants won’t last forever. The longer answer is that there are several factors affecting their use and life span. At Frederick H. Watkins, MD., Dr. Watkins and our team work through all this information with you.
For now, here’s what you need to know:
What are breast implants?
Breast implants are silicone shells filled with either saline (sterile salt water) or silicone gel. Both are FDA-approved and safe. Silicone implants are typically softer, but saline implants are used more commonly.
Dr. Watkins will help you determine which type of implant is best for your situation. Women seek out breast augmentation or enhancement for various medical and aesthetic reasons.
Every woman is unique in what she needs or wants, but the general function of breast implants is to provide a fuller, firmer, better-proportioned appearance. Augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the United States.
How long do breast implants typically last?
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons says breast implants shouldn’t be considered lifetime devices. Implants today are designed to last more than 10 years; in many cases, they can continue in good shape for 20 years or more.
The chance of an implant rupturing increases by 1% each year, so the older your implants are, the greater the chance of complications.
When the time finally comes, reasons for implant removal include rupture of your silicone or saline implant, hardening of scar tissue around your implant, changes in the position of your implant, your implant developing ripples, or simply personal choice.
What can you do?
If you take proper care of your breast implants, you can extend their lifespan. This starts during your recovery from the augmentation surgery. You’ll be told to wear a support garment or surgical bra as you recover, but if you don’t follow this direction, the lack of support can lead to increased sagging of your breasts over time.
If your plastic surgeon gives you any additional recommendations, you should follow those, including annual checkups and regular self-checks. If your implants are filled with silicone, the FDA recommends an MRI 5-6 years after your surgery and every 2-3 years after that to check on the condition of your implants.
Following these guidelines will help extend the life of your implants and give you more time before you need a replacement.
